ID5 Annual Meeting 2022

Brussels, Hybrid Meeting

October 27-28, 2022

The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) (hereinafter referred to as the “Partners”) met in Brussels for the 2022 ID5 Annual Meeting, with some of the Partners joining the discussions online.

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) was present at the meeting as an observer.

During the Annual Meeting on 27 October the Partners welcomed the publication of the “ID5 2022 Booklet”. The Partners also adopted a joint statement that focused on adaptable and interoperable industrial design systems concentrating on emerging technologies, and broader cooperation with a wide group of users. 12 ongoing projects were discussed, of which 4 were concluded, notably:

• Study on the Admissibility of Internet Information as Legitimate Disclosure for Novelty Examinations

• Deferment of Publication

A Study of Term of Protection (with summary chart)

Remedies and Relief for Industrial Design Infringement (with summary chart)

At the same time, four new projects were adopted:

E-Learning Platform for SMEs

Assessment of Design

Indication for Registered Designs

Protection of Digital Design in Metaverse

On 28 October the ID5 offices welcomed in person representatives of some EU user associations (AIM, ANIPA, BMM, BusinessEurope, ECTA, FICPI, GRUR and MARQUES), as well as users from INTA and the Japan Intellectual Property Association. They also welcomed 56 Chinese, Korean and US users online thanks to the hybrid format of the event. The users were informed of the recent developments in the ID5 offices and the highlights of the Annual Meeting. The session also provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges of new technologies, hybrid work, recommended design practices, electronic exchange of priority documents, and communication.
The KIPO has been serving as Secretariat for the group as of the conclusion of the Annual meeting, and will remain in this role until the end of the 2023 Annual Meeting.
